                      Over a period of three years, Carol researched and  photographed surviving pioneer mills and mill sites in Ontario, Quebec and the  Maritimes to illustrate their importance in the development of Canadian  communities and commerce.  
                       
                      This book documents the history, technology and  architectural styles of gristmills, sawmills, and windmills from the early  1700's to 1900. When it was published, it was in the vanguard of  "art" publications on Canadian history and architecture. It was  received as a valuable contribution to increasing public awarenes of community  heritage.

                      Over a period of two years, CarolI travelled throughout Ontario,  researching, photographing and writing about these mostly rural country stores  and their keepers. 
                      
                    This book is filled with photographs of overstuffed interiors and  amiable store owners and visitors, as well as an historical background about  the growth of the general store in early settlement and its transition to the  department stores of today.
